Febuary to March 2010 report

INTRODUCTION
This report covers the activities planned and achievement made during the month of February 2010 at Zikomo Matande CBO in Zomba District.

MATANDE CBO CENTRE
Matande conservation and Self-Sufficiency Based Integrated Programme is one of the programmes being implemented by Zikomo Organization Malawi in Zomba Distrct and is funded by Zikomo Organization of Ireland. Matande project started in August 2008 by constructing a resource centre. The project is aimed at improving the livelihood standard of farm families of Group village Matande by improving household food security, self-sufficiency and access to income and social services by December 2012. And in order to achieve the above program goal, the program is implementing activities in three areas of food security, integrated rural development and capacity building. The programs are designed to address the problem of food insecurity, low –income level and poor access to social services experienced by the farmers in the area. The overall purpose of the program will be achieved through the following objectives:

  1. Increase and diversify crop production.
  2. Promote development of cooperative and rural youth.
  3. Improve access to agricultural inputs.
  4. Promote livestock production.
  5. Promote gender mainstreaming into program activities.
  6. Enhance literacy and numerical capability of adult illiterates.
  7. Reduce population growth rate and HIV/AIDS incidences
  8. Strengthening the capacity of local institutions beneficiaries and staff

The following is the summary of the activities achieved during the month of February up to mid March 2010 at the center.

1.    SENSITIZATION MEETINGS
During the period, we have conducted several meetings at the center with the committee members. These meetings were aimed at increasing the activities to be implemented at the center.

2.    AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
During the period, together with the committee, we have managed to apply fertilizers and bunking in both maize fields. We were also monitoring the maize fields.
PROBLEM FACED
During the months of December up to mid February, we had a dry spell in the area that affected the crops negatively, hence we are expecting to harvest lower than expected.

3.    PLASTERING THE TOILET
During the period, we were also busy finishing plastering the toilet at the center. One bag of cement was used for the activity. And we paid the constructor k1200.00 for the work.

4.    ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM
This is to enhance literacy and numerical capability of Adult illiterates in the area of group village Matande. We planned to open a class at the center during the month of march, but lucky enough the program started earlier than expected due to high demand. As of now, the program is on, but not many are coming as some of the learners are guarding their maize fields from wild animals like monkeys. And we have no male learners at the center; they are shy to mix with women. But we will put much effort to encourage them to attend the class.

5.    YOUTH GROUP AND HIV/AIDS PROGRAM
This is to reduce population growth rate and HIV/AIDS incidences in the Area. During the period we have formed the Youth Group at the center. There are 17 members in the group, (12 males and 5 females). This group will be carrying out several activities like income generating activities and HIV/AIDS programs. As of now, they have formed a band that is performing during the meeting days. We hope more people (youth) will join the group. The aim of this group is to:
- Promote behavior change interventions to prevent new and re-infections.
- Promote care and support to people suffering from AIDS related complications.
- Promote openness and positive living principles.

6.    PROCUREMENT OF ZIGZAGGED SEWING MACHINE
During the period, we planned to procure one zigzagged sewing machine for the center. So far we have achieved it. We have bought it at a price of k22, 000.00.

7.    ORPHAN AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN CARE
This is an on going activity taking place at the center. A Total of 38 children are attending classes at the center, and we hope more children will be coming as the center is becoming more popular in the area (youth, women and men are coming for variance activities).
