Beekeeping

Zikomo has set up training in bee-keeping and honey production for 22 farmers in the Machinga area of southern Malawi. Communities in the area received 63 beehives, beekeeping equipment and honey presses from Zikomo in 2007, but had not received the promised government-sponsored training.  The latest initiative will allow 11 local community groups to benefit fully from the beehive donation.

The training took place in September 2008 over a period of 5 days with national experts in beekeeping training the farmers in apiculture.
It is hoped that the provision of the beehives, smokers, protective suits, and honey presses combined with the latest training initiative will provide farmers with a sustainable source of income long into the future. We will continue to monitor this project and look into possible expansion.
